 Learn to Sing Showcases

What’s The Deal WITH SHOWCASES?

By Melissa Ellen

showcase  noun

a place or occasion for presenting something favorably to general attention : the gallery will provide a showcase for Atlanta's young photographers.

verb [ trans. ]

exhibit; display : the albums showcase his production skills.

I have been performing professionally since 1989 and voice teaching, coaching and consulting with singers and bands since 1990.   Before performing professionally, I was trying to perform professionally.  For years I took voice lessons, went from band to band, musician to musician, and every audition I could find.  As you can well imagine, I didn’t know what I was doing.  During this period I participated in many showcases.  As my experience and talent grew, I moved from amateur to professional.  After several years of performing professionally, pursuing a record deal and vocal coaching independent mainstream music artists I would attend showcases in support of my students or as a judge or industry presence.  I eventually started speaking on music business panels from my dual perspective.  I moved to Nashville about two years ago and since have attended at least 30 showcases.  I attend them mostly for networking purposes and to learn more about the Nashville experience.  Although, the music business has changed dramatically over the past two decades, two things that have remained constant are that less informed people get taken advantage of and, there are a lot of talented people participating in the wrong showcase or a showcase they are absolutely not ready for.  It is my intention here to help clarify the showcase experience.

There are three major categories of showcases.

Category 1:  Usually held at a night club, these showcases can have up to ten performers sometimes performing up to two songs each with their backing tracks.  Often it is set up like a contest where the prize is performing in front of music industry executives and maybe getting an hour or two of free studio time.  Basically, all the participants invite everybody they know so the club makes money, and because all studio projects take more than two hours (even one song), the studio will make money off of the winner. This is not really a bad thing because studio experience is great too.  If the studio owner is a producer, or song creator, you might get some cool original music out of it. These events are a great way to get performance experience. You can meet people in the business.  You can meet other artists.  You can meet songwriters and producers.  It’s the slimy “Hey baby I can make you a star” people that you should be aware of, including anyone offering you a management deal or production deal.  Plus, when you are new to the business, you may think you are going to get a record deal from this kind of event.  Because I do not believe in saying, “Oh that’s never going to happen”, I will say that 99% of the time, no one will be getting a record deal worth anything from this performance.  The showcase is just an opportunity for you to gain experience.

Category 2 (Music Conferences):  Usually singer/ songwriter or bands selected from their audio or video submissions by the event management persons.  They perform up to a thirty-minute set.  There are at least five other people on the bill for the evening at that particular venue. These conferences can have up to 300 bands performing at many venues over a period of a few days.  There are often music industry professionals at each venue at any given time.  The performers are independent artists who create their music, perform and even tour on their own.  Sometimes there is a specific showcase of only a select few chosen as the best of the conference, bands that are ready to break out on the scene.  These conferences are fabulous for performing, gaining fan base, getting education and networking with other artists and industry folks however, you have to be up to par to get to perform there in the first place.

Category 3:  One artist, showcasing for industry executives and shopping for an artist deal or production deal from a record label, in which case the audience is label executives and producers. Sometimes the showcase is for an established signed artist soliciting material for their next CD project, in which case the audience is publishers, songwriters, song pluggers, and producers. There is usually a good amount of money spent by the artist for the venue, for the pro musicians, for all the promo and work done prior to the event, etc.   Usually, the artist has a manager, or assistant who has been cultivating a buzz with industry people for a while prior to the showcase.  These showcases take place in New York, L.A. and Nashville.  (I lived in Atlanta for 16 years and there was never once a professional Artist Showcase there.)

Here are some helpful Tips:  The trick is to know which type of showcase is for you.  Be clear and honest about your level of talent.  If you are not sure, ask a professional for a consultation, not your friends.  Check out the showcase(s) online that you are interested in being a part of, and even listen to other artists who participated in it previously.

When performing, do not try to impress or engage us with banter.  It’s a showcase, not a gig.  Do not tell us about your website or new CD, or give us a ten-minute soliloquy about your next song.  Be well rehearsed and kick butt.

If there is a fee to perform, I usually would say, “don’t bother” however, most conferences charge a nominal fee upon submission (up to $25).  This is a common and accepted practice.  A showcase where you only perform one song should not have an entry fee at all.  There are certainly exceptions to the rule.  Just keep in mind that you can perform a lot of places for free.  The goal is that people should eventually be paying you to perform.

Always have business cards with you.  Always collect business cards.  Have a notepad or use the back of each card collected to write down where and when you met that person and what you spoke about.  NEVER hand out CDs to industry people unless you are asked.  Establishing relationships is the key to success in this business (as with most businesses).

 Understanding Postcard Printing

Looking Forward

When you have a business and have periodical advertising campaigns, you might have already got used to discovering something new about your business. But, think about if you would have to use postcard printing services over and over. What solutions are you going to find in this overused mean of printed advertisement?

The thing is that such mean might have been already used plenty of times. However, you can still keep on substituting the components to suit the event or occasion, your target market and the time that your ads are made, so that in the end you could come up with your own and unique product.

You may take a closer look at each component before deciding how to make things right in order to achieve a particular goal, which is bringing up your ad and make people find it completely uncommon.

The Design

This is something that you should really pay your attention to. This part must be done by a true professional. In case you can’t afford such services, find a printing company that offers free designs and templates to their customers. This would be much easier. However, since it’s free, you must know that you are not the only one with such designs. The only way you can modify and improve it is to add adequate information, which would customize your postcards.

The Color

Now, this part has to be suited into the design of your postcards. So, you would have to settle on this matter, while still considering the design. There are lots of factors that might affect it.

-          Which is your target market? Does it have more men or women? What age do these people mostly fall under?

-          What is the most popular thing in the time  of your promotion?

-          What is your main message? Will your particular concept for your materials work for that certain campaign?

-          Do any celebrations coincide with your campaign? And other things you could work out from this point.

The Message

You might have already employed exactly the same messages during your campaigns. However, there are many ways of saying same things in various forms. This also relates to the marketing message you use.

-          The tone might be change in dependence of your audition. The message might be written in an optimistic manner, with humor, or just plain and simple. Also, this will depend on who is the end addressee of your message.

-          In case you’ve got a tag line, which is already associated with your business, you may stick to it further, Anyway, while you’re still figuring out the ‘good’ and ‘bad’ of your campaign, you may look for better ways till you locate something that you will stick your brand with.

Postcard printing services already might’ve been in use for a long time. However, this old and practiced tool might be extremely positive for your business, while you are going to your goal.

FAR INFRARED RAYS–benefits of the biomat with “lowest price on the web”

BioMat with “$100 discount for therapists & practitioners”

How are Far Infrared Rays (FIR) created in the BioMat? The method of generating Far Infrared Rays FIR through the BioMat is accomplished by putting pulses of energy DC-Current through a carbon ceramic material called the Japanese Kurera Super Fiber. As the Far Infrared Rays (FIR) passes through the Amethyst crystals, the crystals elongate the wave length and emit a Long Wave FIR (8-12 Microns) that penetrates 5-7 inches into the body.

What are Far Infrared Rays and where do they come from?

FIR (Far Infrared Rays)Technology was first brought to us by nature herself. All living things emit certain amounts of FIR (Far Infrared Rays). Traditionally we’ve gotten our daily dose of FIR (Far Infrared Rays) from sunlight, which is composed of all the energy wavelengths in the electromagnetic spectrum. FIR is a form of energy that is part of the electro-magnetic light frequency of sunlight that is not visible to the human eye.

Far Infrared Rays is safe, gentle and beneficial unlike the damaging effects of short wavelengths such as X-rays and gamma rays. FIR should not be confused with ultraviolet rays that cause sunburn and skin damage. FIR (Far Infrared Rays) heat improves circulation and removes dead cells on the surface of the skin. There are many ways that FIR have benefited people throughout the ages. In Korea they would use radiant floor heating with ceramic tiles. This is one way that the Korean culture utilized FIR (Far Infrared Rays)to stay warm in the winter, greatly contributing to their health and longevity.

Negative ions health benefits - Negative Ions have a positive effect on people. Positive Ions have a negative effect on people. An atom that has one of its normal orbiting electrons removed is called a Positive Ion. An atom with an extra electron added is called a negative Ion. So you see, it’s really kind of backwards; the terms Negative and Positive are actually reversed.

Negative ions health benefits - When the amount of Negative Ions in the blood is increased, the function of a cell is activated.
